An Interview with Claudia Paola of Molto Fashion

I was born in New York City, and I grew up living between Rome, Italy, and NYC; I still live straddling the Atlantic, splitting my time equally between the two cities. I was always more artistically inclined (I love to draw, act, and I played classical piano for about 10 years), but I was the type that focused most of my attention on the academic responsibilities of school. In college, I studied Middle Eastern Studies and the Arabic language, and for a while there, I thought I would continue in an academic direction. But after I graduated, I took some time off to rediscover my artsy side, and that's when I fell into blogging. Being from Rome and New York City, fashion was always something I was very aware of. Once I got older, it was natural for me to try and find an identify for myself through my clothes. It's like an inner urge, and putting the outfits together and wearing them is such a release. Come say hi at Molto Fashion!

This interview was published on Wednesday, January 04, 2012.

What do you do when you're not blogging? What is your job?

Claudia: Actually, I've been blogging full-time! It works out perfectly since I travel a lot, bouncing between my home cities, NYC and Rome.

How would you describe your personal style?

Claudia: Labels are hard, especially because I know I'm not a "purist" and don't strictly adhere to any one particular style subculture. But I love the '70s and the '90s, and I'm strongly influenced by bohemian, goth, and grunge styles.

What label(s)/store(s) do you favor?

Claudia: I love to support small vintage shops, artisans, and indie designers/small businesses. But I'm also a dedicated long-time Urban Outfitters shopper, though I am careful not to break the bank. It's important to me to remain wise when I spend my money.

What are you currently grooving to?

Claudia: My taste in music is so vast and eclectic that it borders on impractical! Especially when I grow bored of what's on my iPod (like now). So when that happens, I just put Fleetwood Mac and Goldfrapp on repeat.

How are you able to stay fashionable without spending a lot of $$? What are your tips and where do you shop?

Claudia: I almost never buy things full whack: I swear by sales! It's so rewarding to find a piece I like at a price that is kind to my wallet. I never throw anything away. I love to go shopping in my own closet as well as raid the closet of family members. I almost never fall prey to impulse buys.

A woman's most beautiful feature is her:

Claudia: Her self-confidence and inner strength.

One trend you would like to never see again is:

Claudia: Militant dress-down trends that were popular during my teen years. I remember it was almost taboo to dress up a little and wear anything other than jeans, sweats, and sneakers- how boring and rigid! Wear what you want when you want. That's my motto!

People would be surprised to know that I...

Claudia: Speak 4 languages: I grew up bilingual, Italian-English, and I also speak Arabic and Spanish. I collect Cabbage Patch Kids and Hello Kitty things, and I am a devout fantasy/sci-fi nerd.

What's your latest obsession?

Claudia: Tumblr, inspiration blogs, my Nikon, imperfect vintage photography, vampy lipstick, the 1970s and 1990s, velvet, and John Lennon sunglasses

Your most prized possession?

Claudia: That's a hard one! I grow attached to things, especially my books, my wardrobe, and my dolls (yes you read that correctly). If I wanted to give a "normal" answer, I'd say my unicorn cameo ring. If I wanted to give an "honest" answer, I'd say my first ever Cabbage Patch Kid named Shnooks.

In your opinion, every woman should own:

Claudia: Her own personal style! I find that many women all too frequently worry what others think and allow that to influence them when building a wardrobe. I think it's important to encourage women to trust what they like best because as long as you like it, you'll look good in it.
